Last season didn’t go the way we hoped it would, but it is now in the past. We’re moving forward and focusing on next season.
The offseason has certainly been all about bigger and better things for me, including my new contract.
It was kind of funny- when I found out about my new contract, I was playing Fortnite (and I didn’t win)! I was on the phone with my agent, and he called me, and it’s one of those games that you can’t pause. If you play with teammates, you can’t let them down. If somebody gets knocked down, you get to revive them. I just muted the TV, and I was on the phone with my agents, and we were talking about the deal, and it was great. I lost that game, but that was awesome news.
People like to talk about the money. Yes, it is a lot of money, but the fact that the team made the offer tells me how much they value what I do on the field, in the locker room, and in the community. I work hard to be the best player I can be, the best teammate, and the best role model. As a professional, it is nice to see the team recognize my contributions.
But fans don’t need to worry. I’m not going to be one of those guys who slacks off after signing his big money contract. I am doing all that I can to make sure I can do my part to help the team win games.
Not just win games but win a lot of games, hopefully, next season and beyond. Playoff appearances. Hopefully, bring in a Super Bowl. That’s the ultimate goal. That’s what everybody wants. Big paydays and contracts, that’s great and all but it’s just extra. Being able to compete at the highest level and having your name mentioned as one of the top guys in the league is what drives me. I’m just trying to be the best I can be.
Part of being the best I can be and representing the team, myself, my family, and the community is my new foundation, the Mike Evans Family Foundation. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do. With my platform as an NFL player and the resources available to me, I can.
Some people may ask why. To them, I say why not?
You know, I love it out here. The fans have been nothing but great to me. They’ve never really bashed me or anything like that. I’ve never ran into anyone that has disrespected me or anything like that. Kids need help in this community just as much as where I’m from, so I’m willing to help, and now I have the means and the resources to help.
I’m appreciative of where I am in life, the opportunities I’ve had, and of everyone that helped me get here. I’ll continue to do what I can on and off the field to make them and everyone else in my life proud. Looking forward to the upcoming season!
