One of the great things about the offseason, other than getting the chance to spend some quality time with my family, is having more time to dedicate to my foundation. Giving back is something that is really important to me. That’s why Ashli and I started the Mike Evans Family Foundation in December.
To be able to put some time and work into its mission feels good. And it doesn’t hurt that this ‘work’ involves me playing basketball and a round of golf with many of my friends and teammates.
A couple weekends ago, I hosted my Charity Celebrity Weekend event back in College Station. We kicked off the weekend with a celebrity basketball game on Friday night and then hit the campus golf course for the First Annual Foundation Golf Tournament.
I can say with great pride and happiness that the weekend was a great success! We raised a lot of money for the foundation. It will go a long way towards helping kids from low-income families live their college dreams as well as support women and families dealing with domestic violence.
My family didn’t have much money growing up. I was fortunate enough to be a good football player and be offered a scholarship to Texas A&M. But most kids are not going to be offered scholarships for sports to a major university. Without that scholarship to help them meet expenses, they can’t go to college. We are dedicated to figuring out how we can best serve and help them realize their dreams.
Domestic violence is a terrible issue in our society. My family struggled with it growing up, so I know how awful it can be and how much it can impact a family. It’s something that no one should ever have to deal with, but, sadly, so many do. If I can help a family going through that struggle—I certainly want to.
I think this is what life is about -- you have fun, enjoy your time while you are here but help people along the way and especially if you have been you know blessed beyond measures. So, you know I have been blessed, have had a lot of help throughout my life and I just want to pay it forward.
To my boys that came out and supported my event—you guys are the best, and I can’t thank you enough. Johnny Manziel, Jamies Winston, Charles Sims, Donavan Smith, Eric Ebron, Ryan Swope, Dante Hall, Tra Carson—you guys are great football players, great teammates, and even better friends.
Thank you to everyone that came out. I hope you had a great time and I hope to see you again next year. I’m grateful to you as will the child or family your donation touches. I look forward to doing it all again next year.
